Real

You’ve realized you’re real,
-but only after you’ve played the many roles
-you know are played without zeal,
-from which springs the need to stoke the coals

-that tell you what to feel.

You’ve realized love’s real,
-but only after you’ve broken the hearts
-of those you’d never meant to steal,
-and tried to play the many parts

-you thought would only serve to heal.

You’ve realized wrong’s real,
-but only after you’ve played the role,
-of the misguided judge to seal
-the fate of those who’d pay the toll,

-a price you deemed to conceal.

You’ve realized it’s real,
-but only after you’d run out
                -of reasons why you kneel,
-to the name of what you know not about,

-and yet spoke of a great deal.

So you’ve realized that life
        -though thoroughly unscrupulous to all,
                -tends to create much strife
-for those who’d welcome the fall

-by following that which is rife.
