As you probably know, Kenny, Travis and I have been playing disc golf regularly for almost a year now, and off and on since 2005. When we started last spring we were afraid it might be one of those things that we’d get really in to for awhile and then drop. Obviously, that is not the case at this point.
For a long time I was frustrated that I wasn’t getting better. Now I’m finally willing to accept that I am, it’s just so gradual I don’t really notice. I’m not one of those people who got the bug, went out, bought every piece of plastic they could and played daily for three months. I’d say we’ve averaged about 3 rounds a month for the warm months and about 1 a month for the winter. This is excluding the EPIX and the freak days where Kenny and I would play 36 holes.
Recently some things have obviously improved, though, and I’d like to talk about those.
First is the fact that I’ve switched back to a backhand since just before the EPIX because forehand was hurting my elbow too much. Now I barely do a forehand shot, and when I do it usually sucks compared to what I did before I learned to really backhand. Ditto my failures with hammer shots. But it’s made up for by the fact that I do backhands pretty well now.
Another thing that’s brought my improving skills to my attention: the last time times I’ve gone out, I’ve shot at least one hole on the course in two strokes.
Playing at Wills park last weekend really brought it home, however. We hadn’t played there since last May. My memories of that park involve a lot of floundering, water holes, and general failure. While I wouldn’t categorize what just happened as pretty, it was definitely a marked improvement. I could tell how I’d improved over the year just by the fact that (most) of my shots went where I expected them to.
So there you have it. I’m still terrible. I’ve still not shot an entire course on par or lower. But I do par holes quite often now. And I have shot individual holes under par. I’m finally feeling like I’m doing better.
Within a month I’ll be bitching about how I’m still not doing well, trust me.
I plan on making a feature about our improving disc golf skills soon. At the moment I lack the drive.
What I will say, because he hasn’t, is that Kenny lost his red champ starfire at Wills park on Saturday. I don’t think he wrote his name on it, but I could be wrong.
This is only the second disc to have ever been lost by the Jux crew. Strange that it’s the Starfire, which we thought was lost at ERP while we searched for over an hour. It came back that time, though. This time it remained hidden until Kenny decided to call off the search.
Maybe it will come back, but likely it won’t. Whatever version of heaven my old XS is in, I hope the Starfire has joined it there.
I will write a post about disc golf. But that’s neither here nor there.
Tomorrow Laura leaves for Denver, for real this time. It’ll probably be months before I see her again. I’ve never done this whole long distance relationship thing before. I get the feeling it’s going to be difficult.
Is she worth it? For sure.
Hopefully some day we will be closer again.
That’s all I have to say about that.
Things that have broken at random this month:
Ice maker.
Computer.
WaveBird.
Laundry closet door.
As you probably know, I ‘work’ and go to school in the middle of downtown Atlanta, a block from the capital.
As you also probably know, this Friday downtown Atlanta was hit by a tornado. Lots of damage.
What I saw today wasn’t that bad. If you were from out of town you might just assume Atlanta is a filthy, run-down place. There were construction cranes everywhere. Broken glass on the sidewalks. All of the traffic lights had fallen down but were already back up or replaced; they were also the source of a lot of the broken glass. Street signs were missing or just messed up in general. Campus itself looked good, but a lot of our banners were ripped up. Everything that could be fixed quickly, such as broken windows or minor things, had already been fixed. The stuff that couldn’t was pretty obvious. There was a good bit of rubble by the Art building that was the remains of one of the GSU logo/name placards that had formerly occupied that side of the building.
Overall, Atlanta just seemed ‘off’ and traffic was horrible. But it definitely wasn’t destroyed.

This is the closest I’ve come yet to a hole in one. Hole #6 at Oregon Park from the white tees. My cell phone camera sucks, as usual, but that disc is within three feet of the hole.
It was the best shot I had all day. Although I did have some other good ones.
Tonight I’m finally writing both the Brawl post and the new computer post. Don’t let me forget.
