This rant has been done many times before, but it's a valid point and
apparently it bears repeating. Why do we have specialized months for everything?
Seriously, I was about to see the movie Insomnia when this ad pops up stating
that May is Teen Pregnancy awareness month. Now, I don't have anything against
being aware of teen pregnancy, I believe that it is a strong issue that deserves
a great deal of attention. My issue is that shouldn't that be something
we are aware of all the time, especially if you are the parent of a teenager.
Why do we need a special month set aside for it? Furthermore, why are those
ads so fucking stupid? Everytime I watch them all I can think is, "did someone
actually have an epiphany from watching this? Was there actually someone
out there who didn't realize that teen pregnancy was a bad thing before this?"
And they are usually corny as hell. This one featured a girl on the phone
telling her boyfriend "Later Baby" Oh yeah, nice use of the double entendre
there. I'm sure that's really going to stop a girl in the heat of the moment
dead in her tracks. Look, let's hope by the time your kids are teenagers
they've learned somewhere that "sex equal baby" and they might want to be
careful. I'm not for premarital sex by any means. I believe that sex can
and will destroy a great many things if one is not careful how you use it
but if you're going to do it at least try to keep from creating something
you're not ready to handle. Wear a condom. Get on the pill. Do what you have
to do.
*side note: Oddly enough, Dahmer wore a condom when he had sex with dead
bodies so maybe those ads do get in somewhere after all.
